| VACATIONING IN "KIHEI TOWN"
As you plan your Maui vacation, here are some Kihei facts:
Kihei (pronounced key-hay)
The Hawaiian meaning of Kihei is "cape" or a traditional tapa cloth cloak tied in a knot.
Average Temperature: 75-85 Farrenheit. Kihei boasts the sunniest and driest weather on the island of Maui. Even when the rest of the island may be cloudy or rainy, Kiheis temperatures are very moderate from summer to winter, with fairly constant tropical breezes.
Average Rainfall: Less than 6 in/year (30 cm.)
Shopping, Dining, and Entertainment: Kihei has several shopping centers and many farmers markets and crafts fairs. Major supermarkets, convenience stores and a health food store allow visitors to purchase food and any forgotten items from home. Dozens of restaurants are available in Kihei, catering to every budget, appetite, and culinary experience. Many visitors find that the Maui Entertainment Book reduces the expense of eating out since many Kihei restaurants participate in the Entertainment program. When you have had your fill of the sunshine, Kiheis movie theater features the latest in film releases.
Number of Whales Annually: 1,500
Approximately 1,500 humpback whales migrate each winter to Hawaiis waters. This is a special attraction for Maui visitors since the humpback whales are listed on the endangered species list with only 7,000-8,000 surviving today. Baby whales born in Hawaiian waters weigh in at just 2,000 pounds, while an adult whale is 45 feet long and weighs 40 tons.
